VHSL 2023: Black Sabbath Sleepover
On January 20th, Statesmen Theatre premiered Black Sabbath Sleepover, a brand-new comedy by Mr. DeLeo in which five nerdy girls in a suburban basement on Friday the 13th summon Hecate, the ancient goddess of sorcery - and sell their souls to her to become popular (with disastrous results). The crowd reactions were through the roof and hopes were high riding into the VHSL Contest the next day. Despite being the audience favorite, Marshall tied for 2nd, and was edged out by judges' tiebreaker points. So no advancing to the District round this year. (Silver lining: senior Reyna Berry was named to the All-Star Cast!) And the show was reprised for this year's one-act festival, giving the talented cast & crew more chances to perform. Written specifically to address the gender imbalance in high school theatre, the play featured 10 speaking roles for women, 3 for men, and a slew of extras.
