Marshall's Statesmen Theatre won the District round of the annual Virginia High School League (VHSL) one-act competition on Sat., January 22 with their performance of the immersive church play, Captain of the Bible Quiz Team by Tom Jacobson. Delivered as a series of sermons from Christmas Eve to Easter Sunday, Luke Batarseh plays a novice pastor in a rural Minnesota Lutheran church, dealing with crises on multiple fronts. Basically a one-man show, other students play congregation members as the audience becomes part of the church services. There will be more opportunities to see the play as audience restrictions (which were in place for the first VHSL round) have been lifted!
The play will run after the Winter One-Acts (Feb 3-5). It then plays in competition for the VHSL Regional Round on Thursday evening, February 10 @ 8:30 PM. (The entire VHSL night - consisting of 4 one-acts from Madison, McLean, Chantilly & Marshall High Schools (in that order) kick off at 5:30 PM. You can come see the entire festival, or just pop in/out for Marshall's entry @ 8:30. Admission is FREE to any and all VHSL performances.
